Oloroso meaning ‘scented’ in Spanish is a variety of fortified wine (sherry) made in Jerez region and produced by oxidative aging. It is normally darker than Amontillado sherry.
The Port of Leith used to be an essential element in the sherry trade between Jerez and Scotland. The wine is packaged with a beautiful label showing images of Leith on the left and Sanlúcar on the right.
Port of Leith is an Edinburgh-based distillery in the making. Their building application has been approved, as well as a gin stillhouse, and they expect to be up and running as a whisky distillery by the end of 2020. In the meantime they are trying to fund the construction works with the release of Oloroso sherry sourced from Bodegas Barón.
Bodegas Barón is a traditional family company in Jerez with rooted wine tradition of almost 400 years together.
Sherry is made using the Solera aging system, also referred to as “fractional blending”. This is a system, complicated in nature, developed by the Spanish and Portuguese and is used in the production of Sherry and Port.Though naturally dry, the relatively high strength and full body of an Oloroso will give it an impression of roundness and even sweetness.
